High Tunnels Go Up at Iron Roots Farm in Urban Youngstown Ohio

Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation (YNDC) has been doing a great deal to curb the issues surrounding vacant houses in the city, and has come up with a number of programs to spark economic development. Iron Roots Farm is one of those programs. Put into motion to jump start education and to give a working example of alternative land re-use. Iron Roots grows food right on the YNDC headquarters, which is located in a formerly vacant home that has been repurposed and renovated. Also on the site is a commercial / shared kitchen space that can house workshops and process some of the food grown there.

Tunnel Vision Hoops was brought in by Iron Roots Farm to build some winter growing infrastructure. Wanting to maximize the use of the land through four seasons YNDC and Iron Roots Farm purchased two different High Tunnels. The first was a 24 ft. x 80 ft. Gothic Arch Commercial High Tunnel and the second was a 30 ft. x 120 ft. Commercial High Tunnel. Both were to be anchored in the ground with concrete, and included full wind and snow supports, as well as sliding doors and end-wall ventilation.
